What to Do With a Heirloom Wedding Gown: Keep, Redesign, or Repurpose?

If you’ve inherited your mother’s or grandmother’s wedding dress, you may be wondering what the best option is. An heirloom gown holds sentimental value, and there are several ways to honor its history while making it meaningful for you.

Wear it as-is
Some vintage gowns have timeless styles and beautiful craftsmanship. With professional cleaning and minor alterations, many brides choose to wear the dress just as it was.

Redesign it into a modern gown
A skilled seamstress can update the style while keeping special details like lace, buttons, or fabric from the original gown. This allows you to blend family tradition with your personal style.

Preserve it for the future
If you prefer to keep the gown intact, professional wedding gown preservation protects the fabric from yellowing and damage so it can be passed down to future generations.

Repurpose it into keepsakes
If the dress can’t be worn, the fabric can still be used to create meaningful items like quilts, ring bearer pillows, christening gowns, or other family keepsakes.

No matter which option you choose, caring for an heirloom wedding gown helps protect the memories and history it represents.

Why Preserve Your Dress?

Wedding Gown Preservation: Protecting Your Dress for a Lifetime

Your wedding gown is more than just a dress—it’s a cherished keepsake filled with memories from one of the most important days of your life. Proper wedding gown preservation ensures your dress stays beautiful for years to come, whether you plan to save it for future generations or simply want to protect your investment.

After your wedding day, your gown may have invisible stains from sweat, makeup, champagne, or outdoor photos. Over time, these stains can darken and damage delicate fabrics like lace, silk, and tulle. Professional wedding gown cleaning and preservation removes these hidden stains and prevents yellowing, fabric weakening, and odor buildup.

Our preservation process begins with a careful inspection of your gown, followed by gentle professional cleaning designed specifically for bridal fabrics and embellishments. Beading, lace, and embroidery are treated with special care to maintain their original beauty. Once cleaned, your gown is expertly packaged in a preservation box to protect it from light, dust, and moisture.

Our Process:
→ Drop off your dress.
→ We clean it with expert care.
→ We preserve it for generations.
→ We notify you as soon as it’s ready.

If your gown needs minor adjustments before or after your wedding, our wedding dress alteration services ensure the perfect fit while maintaining the integrity of the design. From hemming and bustle creation to strap and bodice adjustments, our experienced team helps your dress look flawless on your big day.

Preserving your wedding gown is an investment in your memories. Whether you hope to pass it down, reuse it for a future celebration, or simply keep it safe, professional preservation helps your gown stand the test of time.

Look Your Best For That Fall Wedding

Wedding season is in full swing, and that means you’ll find yourself attending at least one nuptial celebration soon if you haven’t already! Here at Treasured Garment Restoration, we know first hand how stressful it can be making sure you look your best for such an occasion, so we thought we’d give you a few tips.

Get Your Item Cleaned and Pressed

First things first: make sure your clothing is cleaned and pressed properly before you pack.  If you’ve dropped your items off with our sister company, St Croix Cleaners for dry cleaning, they can even fold your dress shirts for you!

How to Dress for a Wedding

Pay attention to the invitation! Semi-formal does not mean business casual, nor is it a license to dress sloppy. Men, make sure you have a nice, well-fitting suit for the occasion while women should be sure to have a dressy, short or long dress. Also, avoid white; that’s the bride’s color!

How to Fold a Suit Jacket for Easy Packing

Here’s a neat tip for traveling men! The method itself is pretty easy, but it’ll take a few tries to master. You want to pop one of the shoulders inside out while holding the suit jacket upright, and fold the outside of the jacket into itself, almost inside out. For a step-by-step with photos to help you along, follow this link over to the Black Lapel style blog.

Keep your Dress Wrinkle Free

For the least amount of worry, using a garment bag is going to be your best bet. If you’ve had your dress dry cleaned (hopefully with us!) we recommend keeping your dress in the dry cleaning bag while traveling as this will help prevent wrinkles. Once you get to your destination, take the dress out, and hang up.  If it has some wrinkles, hang on a hook in the bathroom while you take a shower—the steam will relax most wrinkles.  Also, for any stubborn wrinkles—you can use a hairdryer (on hot) on the reverse side of the fabric to relax them even more!  A normal size garment bag should be able to hold 2 to 3 dresses, meaning you’ll be set no matter what the circumstances.

Finally…

Don’t forget about St Croix Cleaners’ same day service, which is available at a number of our locations for any last-minute garments you need to be cleaned!

Wedding Dress Shopping Tips

The search for your wedding dress can be overwhelming and sometimes frustrating.
Before you go shopping for your wedding dress, check out some of our guidelines to help you in your search.

1. Set your budget.
Going in without a budget can be a recipe for disaster. You may end up leaving the store spending way more than
you can afford on a dress. Go in with a price in mind and leave a little wiggle room to ensure you’re happy with your purchase.

2. Have an style in mind
Capture
This is when Pinterest can come in handy. Go online and cruise around looking at different styles that interest you.
Then when you go to your appointment you are educated on the look you’re going for.

3. Buy a dress that fits or is slightly bigger

Even if you plan on loosing weight, don’t buy a dress that is too small in hopes of dropping a few pounds.
If anything always go bigger. Then if you do loose weight it can always be altered to fit you but adding fabric is difficult.

4. Keep an open mind
More often then not, the style you want may not be the style you end up with. Even if you have a style in mind, stay open to other styles. Other looks may look better on you than you thought!

5. Bring backup

Most importantly, bring a crew of close friends who will share their honest opinions with you.
Support is vital when choosing the dress for your big day.
