A few of the Most Expensive Wedding Gowns

The average wedding gown in 2017 cost $1,211, but that doesn’t even come close to some of the most expensive wedding gowns of all time.  These designers are always trying to be at the height of fashion and the top of the price range!

Starting back in the 1950s, we have the Imperial Pearl Syndicate gown.  Simple in design, this gown was made with over 100,000 cultured pearls on a bed of white satin and a silk ballerina skirt.  This gown weighs an astonishing amount at 27 pounds and most models could only stand to wear it for a half an hour at a time! This dress was considered the most expensive gown during its time period, total cost was $100,000!

A more commonly know wedding gown is the custom Alexander McQueen creation that Kate Middleton wore on her wedding day to Prince William designed by Sarah Burton.  Kate’s gown featured a Satin Bodice with a slightly padded hip.  The attention to detail is truly incredible.  The lace was hand placed and sewn onto the bodice, and cascading in the back is a tasteful 9ft train. It was pieced together like petals on a flower and made with ivory silk and hand embroidered flowers.  This dress comes in at $388,000!

From a very traditional gown to one that doesn’t quite represent the ideal wedding, we have the Vera Wang Peacock Gown.  Vera Wang used the talents of 8 other designers and 2009 male peacock feathers to great the garment.  It contains 2009 feathers to commemorate the year when it was created.  Each feather had to be individually placed and sew on the base of the dress.  Although this gown has yet to be worn at an actual wedding the total cost is $1.5 million dollars!

Our final gown known as The Diamond Wedding Gown was a collaboration between designer Kenee Strauss and jeweler Martin Katz.  It is considered the most expensive wedding dress in the world.  It was made in 2006 for no particular bride, featuring the finest silks and has over 150 karats of diamonds hand sewn to it.  This gown was used just as a display piece for the Ritz-Carlton. If you would like to wear this gown for your wedding, it will set you back $12 million!

Wedding Dress Shopping Tips

The search for your wedding dress can be overwhelming and sometimes frustrating.
Before you go shopping for your wedding dress, check out some of our guidelines to help you in your search.

1. Set your budget.
Going in without a budget can be a recipe for disaster. You may end up leaving the store spending way more than
you can afford on a dress. Go in with a price in mind and leave a little wiggle room to ensure you’re happy with your purchase.

2. Have an style in mind
Capture
This is when Pinterest can come in handy. Go online and cruise around looking at different styles that interest you.
Then when you go to your appointment you are educated on the look you’re going for.

3. Buy a dress that fits or is slightly bigger

Even if you plan on loosing weight, don’t buy a dress that is too small in hopes of dropping a few pounds.
If anything always go bigger. Then if you do loose weight it can always be altered to fit you but adding fabric is difficult.

4. Keep an open mind
More often then not, the style you want may not be the style you end up with. Even if you have a style in mind, stay open to other styles. Other looks may look better on you than you thought!

5. Bring backup

Most importantly, bring a crew of close friends who will share their honest opinions with you.
Support is vital when choosing the dress for your big day.

Having different colored dresses can be a unique way to satisfy all bridesmaids.
If you choose to do this you should pick a palette that makes sense together and compliments the theme of your wedding as well

2. Same colored dresses in different styles

OR you could do the complete opposite and let everyone choose a style that better suites their body, but in a color approved by you.

3. Statement items

Even if you do all decide on different dresses, you can pull all the looks together by having one common statement piece.
This could also serve as your gift to your bridesmaids. whether its a headpiece, necklace or even some kind of fancy footwear.

4. Have a common item among the bridesmaids AND groomsmen

We’ve all seen the wedding party theme where they all have the same sunglasses or socks
Maybe you wont do this idea, but you can find your own way of bringing the entire party together.

5. Have an overall theme, let them choose the dress
20s
For example you could choose the roaring 20’s or maybe another decade.
This way everyone can find a way to represent themselves in a unique yet similar way.

Buying a Used Wedding Dress

Weddings can be very expensive. A great way to cut some of the cost is to consider buying a used wedding dress.
Considering the dress is only worn once, you can often find great
deals on beautiful, gently used gowns.
Their are numerous sites and shops you can visit that buy and sell dresses.

However because they are used, be sure to be extra cautious
when ordering a used gown.
We have found some of these tips to be helpful with
brides shopping for a pre owned dress.

Model - faded

Be sure to get thorough pictures or check the gown out yourself before committing. Stains or stags can often go unnoticed at the right angle. Make sure the images you’re looking at are of the owners album and not the model pictures you can find online. So when chatting with a seller, be sure you know what your buying.

Make sure you’re buying at the right price. A little internet research can go a long way. If you’re nervous about buying online, at least make sure you’re paying a fair price. Especially considering this dress has been worn before.

The dress you buy doesn’t need to be in your exact size. We’ve mentioned in previous blogs what when buying you’re dress its better to go to big than too small. We can always take a dress in but adding fabric is much more difficult. We have a exceptional team that can work with you and your dress to make sure it fits you perfectly.

Be aware of the sellers return policy. Ask the seller exactly what the return policy is. That way if you get it and its in way worse condition than they led on, you can send it back.

5 Tips To Choosing Bridesmaids Dresses

1. Find a style that suits everyone

Talk to your friends and see what styles they DON’T want. It’s no surprise that dressing multiple bridesmaids is a challenge. Show them the styles you’re interested in and have them decide amongst themselves on the final choice. Another trend is having the same dress but fit differently to each bride. That way everyone has something that’s flattering.

2. Find something they would wear again

Because of the cost of bridesmaid’s dresses, find something they could wear another time other than just your wedding. The average cost of a bridesmaids dress is between $100-$300. Make it worth it for them.

3. Make sure the style matches your wedding

Try to find a dress that makes sense and is in sync with the overall theme of the wedding. We’ve all heard the saying “We wouldn’t want to outshine the bride” but it’s possible for everyone to be happy here.

4. Take into consideration the weather

This may seem obvious, however it’s easy to overlook. The time of year should make sense with the style you choose. Even the time of day should be considered.

5. Have an alteration specialist in mind

To ensure that all the dresses fit right, keep an alteration specialist in mind for your bridesmaids to go to. St. Croix Cleaners has staffed excellent seamstresses to help each one of your bridesmaids create the perfect fit.
